Staff Technical Program Manager, Streaming Engineering
at Databricks
Mountain View, United States
P-1489
At Databricks, we are passionate about enabling Data and AI teams to solve the world's toughest problems — from making the next mode of transportation a reality to accelerating the development of medical breakthroughs. We do this by building and running the world's best Data and AI infrastructure platform so our customers can use deep data insights to improve their business. Founded by engineers — and customer obsessed — we leap at every opportunity to solve technical challenges, from designing next-gen UI/UX for interfacing with data to scaling our services and infrastructure across millions of virtual machines. And we're only getting started.
Technical Program Management is an integral part of the Databricks engineering organization and acts as the connective tissue between the various cross-functional teams in the company. In addition to defining and managing repeatable processes to drive execution velocity, TPMs at Databricks are also expected to drive teams through ambiguity, identify risks, manage constraints, find solutions, remove blockers and launch products.
As a TPM, you will be instrumental in driving strategic, high-impact initiatives for our core Streaming Engineering teams. As Databricks continues to innovate in real-time data processing, you will be responsible for managing complex, cross-functional programs that build and scale the streaming infrastructure powering the Databricks platform. You'll be at the heart of projects that enhance our streaming capabilities, ensuring our customers can process massive volumes of real-time data with high reliability and low latency. This role requires deep collaboration with engineering, product management, and customer-facing teams to deliver mission-critical features. This role will report into the R&D Operations team, which is part of the engineering org.
The impact you will have:
- Drive execution of complex, technical projects for our core data streaming services, directly impacting product capabilities and customer success.
- Collaborate closely with engineering teams to define project scopes, manage timelines, and ensure engineering excellence in terms of scalability, reliability, and performance for our real-time systems.
- Work across the entire Databricks infrastructure and multi-cloud environment to deliver robust and integrated solutions.
- Strategically automate and improve day-to-day operations and engineering processes.
- Establish and drive repeatable processes for project execution, risk management, and communication, ensuring clarity and alignment across all stakeholders.
What we look for:
- 7+ years of technical program management experience in an enterprise software environment.
- Bachelor's degree in a related field (e.g., Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering).
- Deep technical understanding of large-scale distributed systems, cloud infrastructure (AWS/Azure/GCP), and data processing. Specific experience with data streaming technologies (e.g., Kafka, Flink, Spark Structured Streaming) is a big plus.
- Proven experience in program management, process definition and improvement, and influencing the adoption of defined processes across multiple teams.
- Ability to facilitate technical conversations to prioritize, manage tradeoffs, identify gaps and risks, drive accountability, and measure success.
- Comfortable handling conflicts and escalations with a solutions-oriented mindset.
- Experience in project/sprint planning, execution driving, risk management, and effective communication to both technical and business stakeholders.
- Experience operating autonomously across multiple teams and organizations in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience with at least one major cloud provider: AWS, Azure, or GCP
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's or advanced technical degree.
- Hands-on experience as a user of data platforms like Databricks, Snowflake, or other similar data engineering solutions.
- Experience with SRE/DevOps practices, including incident management, root cause analysis (RCA), and building for operational excellence.
- Experience building cloud-native infrastructure and applications.
