Senior Software Engineer, Pricing & Availability Platform
at Airbnb
United States
Airbnb was born in 2007 when two hosts welcomed three guests to their San Francisco home, and has since grown to over 5 million hosts who have welcomed over 2 billion guest arrivals in almost every country across the globe. Every day, hosts offer unique stays and experiences that make it possible for guests to connect with communities in a more authentic way.
The Community You Will Join:
The Pricing & Availability Platform (PnA) team owns the common core computation engine for pricing and availability across all of Airbnb's verticals — Stays, Experiences, Services, and Hotels. Our systems power dynamic price calculations, promotional logic, fee and currency computations, real-time inventory management, and booking constraints for every guest and host interaction on Airbnb.
As a Senior Backend Engineer on the Pricing & Availability Platform team, you'll help lead the design and evolution of mission-critical backend services at the core of Airbnb's marketplace. Our domains are innately complex — a key part of the role is building clean, reliable abstractions that hide that complexity, enabling stakeholder teams across Airbnb to move fast while maintaining correctness and consistency across all surfaces.
The Difference You Will Make:
- Architect and evolve core platform capabilities — including pricing computation, availability determination, and fee logic — that power every booking on Airbnb at scale
- Lead investments into new technical capabilities that push the envelope and unlock product innovation
- Nurture a culture of technical quality from design, through code review, to production operations
- Identify and propose solutions to problems coming in the way of technical and product engineering excellence
- Collaborate with internal teams across PDP, Search, Checkout, Reservations, Host Settings, Payments, Tax, and others to deliver consistent and reliable pricing and availability across all Airbnb surfaces
A Typical Day:
As a Senior Software Engineer on Pricing & Availability Platform, you will:
- Architect and implement complex backend features and platform improvements, with a focus on correctness, reliability, and performance at scale.
- Collaborate with other engineers and cross-functional partners across the organization to understand and prioritize technical requirements.
- Proactively grow knowledge of leading edge practices and trends.
- Advocate for and participate in efforts with other engineering teams to advance Airbnb’s engineering processes and technical foundations.
- Drive systemic improvements by identifying patterns to streamline development, reduce toil and increase technical quality and operational excellence over time.
- Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior engineers, fostering a culture of knowledge sharing and continuous learning.
Your Expertise:
- 5+ years of experience in a hands-on software engineering role.
- Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree, preferably in CS, or equivalent experience.
- Considerable experience working in Java and/or Kotlin
- Experience building and operating high-throughput, low-latency distributed systems or data computation pipelines.
- Demonstrated expertise in backend systems within large-scale service-oriented architectures.
- Passionate about efficiency, reliability, technical correctness, and system quality.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills and the ability to work well within engineering organizations and across functions.
- Ability to drive alignment, manage projects and effectively collaborate with stakeholders.
- Capable of making data driven decisions and articulating tradeoffs in any technical decisions.
