Payments at Airbnb enables any two people in the world to frictionlessly exchange money, supporting billions of dollars in transactions across 190+ countries and dozens of currencies.
The Payments Infrastructure team builds and operates the foundational systems that make Payments reliable, scalable, observable, and developer-friendly across production and non-production environments. This team owns the core infra frameworks, testing environments, observability, and cross-team enablement that power all Payments product teams.
The Difference You Will Make
As a Senior Software Engineer, you will take ownership of several mission-critical infrastructure areas including:
- Payments staging & airdev test environments
- End-to-end (E2E) payment flow testing, monitoring, and incident response
- Test data strategy, mocking strategy, and datascopes adoption
- Shared infra and frameworks used by all Payments teams
- Early-stage Payments AI agent platform capabilities for staging incident triage
You will work closely with Payments product teams, Payments QE, central Infra, and partner orgs to ensure Payments remains highly available, debuggable, and safe to evolve.
A Typical Day
- Own the health and evolution of Payments testing and staging ecosystems.
- Lead complex incident triage and guide cross-team mitigation in test environments .
- Set technical direction for test process, test infrastructure, data strategy, and observability.
- Partner with senior engineers, QE, and Infra on org-wide reliability initiatives.
- Mentor engineers and raise the bar for Payments quality.
Your expertise
- 7+ years of software engineering experience in a fast-paced, high-scale environment.
- Strong coding skills in Java, Python, or Scala.
- Proven experience designing, building, and operating distributed systems end to end.
- Deep understanding of debugging complex production and non-production failures.
- Strong sense of ownership for availability, reliability, and system correctness.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate across teams.
- Experience building testing infrastructure, CI/CD pipelines and testing environments.
- Experience with payments, financial systems, or regulated environments is preferred
- Hands-on experience with distributed storage systems (MySQL, TiDB/CockroachDB, Redis, etc.).
- Familiarity with AWS and large-scale cloud deployments.

This position is US - Remote Eligible. The role may include occasional work at an Airbnb office or attendance at offsites, as agreed to with your manager.
