About the role
This role owns how Samsara consistently hires top software engineering talent at startup speed and with a high pace of innovation. As Head of Software Engineering Recruiting, your job is to build a function that delivers exceptional hires today and gets stronger over time. We care about quality, and we build systems that continuously produce better results: clearer profiles, stronger signals, better candidate experience, and better decisions.You will lead a small, senior team of full-cycle recruiters and partner closely with three VP+ engineering leaders. Together, you will define what “great” looks like, earn trust through a deep business context, and run a recruiting engine that is rigorous, nimble, and built to last.
This is a hybrid position requiring 2 days per week in our San Francisco office.
In this role, you will:
- Lead a team that holds a clear bar for senior engineering talent, with tight alignment across recruiters and hiring leaders.
- Build deep recruiter context so the team can represent the work credibly: product demos, tech direction, and the customer problems we solve.
- Raise hiring quality by improving signal-to-noise at each step: sharper role definition, stronger screens, and more consistent interview evaluation.
- Partner closely with three VP+ engineering leaders to build the teams they need, staying responsive as priorities shift.
- Work with People Partners and engineering leaders to learn from great hires and mis-hires, then update profiles, assessment, and closing approaches based on what we learn.
- Design a research-centric approach to hiring: talent mapping, deliberate outreach, and long-term relationship building.
- Define and implement best-in-class tools for sourcing and relationship management, and build team skill in using them well.
- Strengthen our talent brand and attraction strategy through the channels and communities that matter for senior engineers, backed by disciplined CRM and nurture.
- Model Samsara’s values: Embed inclusivity, long-term vision, and teamwork into all aspects of hiring and leadership.
Minimum requirements for the role:
- 10+ years of experience in full-cycle technical recruiting, with deep focus on senior software engineering roles.
- 4+ years leading and developing recruiting teams.
- Demonstrated success hiring exceptional engineers in complex, fast-moving environments.
- Proven ability to influence VP+ engineering leaders through credibility, insight, and preparation
- Strong bar-setting and coaching skills, with a track record of building high-performing teams.
- Experience building research-driven hiring strategies, long-term talent pipelines, and disciplined relationship management.
Samsara’s Compensation Philosophy: Samsara’s compensation program is designed to deliver Total Direct Compensation (based on role, level, and geography) that is at or above market. We do this through our base salary + bonus/variable + restricted stock unit awards (RSUs) for eligible roles. For eligible roles, a new hire RSU award may be awarded at the time of hire, and additional RSU refresh grants may be awarded annually.
We pay for performance, and top performers in eligible roles may receive above-market equity refresh awards which allow employees to achieve higher market.
