Who are we looking for?

Merge is looking for a Senior Engineering Manager to lead our Expansion / Growth engineering organization. This org owns the core sync engine and product surfaces that power how customers access and operationalize their integrated data.

This is a manager of managers role, overseeing ~10+ engineers across multiple teams. You will own a critical product line and be responsible for both execution and org design. We’re looking for a hands-on, product-oriented leader who can operate in ambiguity, stay close to the technical details, and drive high-velocity execution in a startup environment.

You will directly manage team leads (including existing managers) and have full ownership over team structure, roadmap, and outcomes — including evaluating internal leadership growth vs. external hiring. This team is central to key company initiatives including unified expansion, enterprise search, and AI-powered automation.

What you will do:

  • Own and manage a multi-team engineering org (≈10+ engineers across 2+ teams), including managing managers and senior ICs
  • Drive the roadmap for a core product area (Expansion / Growth), aligning execution with company-level goals
  • Partner cross-functionally with product, design, GTM, and leadership to deliver high-impact initiatives (e.g., unified expansion, enterprise search, AI automation)
  • Design and evolve team structure, including hiring strategy, internal promotions, and org scaling
  • Stay hands-on with technical decisions and architecture, especially in high-ambiguity or high-impact areas
  • Build a high-performance culture centered on ownership, speed, and low-ego leadership
  • Drive adoption of AI-enabled development and automation across the team

The Ideal candidate will have:

  • 6+ years of engineering experience with 3+ years in management, including managing managers or team leads
  • Experience leading teams of 10+ engineers across multiple teams in fast-paced, startup environments
  • Strong product orientation — experience owning or deeply influencing product roadmaps and business outcomes
  • Demonstrated ability to operate as a hands-on leader (not purely a people manager)
  • Experience building and scaling engineering teams, including hiring and developing internal talent
  • Familiarity with modern backend systems and infrastructure (e.g., Django, Python, Postgres, AWS, Kubernetes)
  • Interest or experience in AI/ML or developer tooling, or demonstrated curiosity (e.g., actively exploring AI in side projects)
  • Ability to balance priorities, tradeoffs, and cross-functional initiatives to drive business outcomes

Compensation

  • The cash compensation range for this role is $230,000-270,000.
  • Actual compensation packages are based on a wide array of factors unique to each candidate, including but not limited to skill set, years & depth of experience, certifications. In addition to cash compensation, all employees receive an equity compensation package.
