As a Technical Artist specialized in characters, you will be working with a team of talented engineers and artists to co-develop new games and experiences with AAA partners that work with Roblox. You will be helping the partner from prototyping to primary preproduction, with your responsibilities shifting from co-creating to advising and guiding toward the end of their production cycle. Creating new rigging systems, skinning, and leveraging Roblox’s cutting edge motion systems, you’ll be collaborating with character artists and animators to bring to life their creations on our platform. You will also assist in onboarding and educating the partner, so they can wrap the project on their own, using your advice and guidance to complete the game.
You will:
- Be a subject matter expert on motion systems and rigging, including skinning and optimization for games.
- Collaborate with character artists and engineers to bring characters to life by rigging characters, both for early game prototyping and validating either system capabilities.
- Work alongside AAA developers, provide technical support, and solve problems across the character pipeline.
- Evaluate our internal workflows and tools to develop a POV on areas of critical investment; bring knowledge of industry best practices to the team
- Partner with Engine and Roblox Studio leaders to advocate for the most impactful features or technology improvements.
- Partner with our community engagement and documentation teams to build tutorials and sample content when necessary
You have:
- A Bachelor’s degree or proven experience in a related CG field or computer science
- 10+ years experience in the game industry, worked on titles on multiple platforms (mobile a plus)
- Ability: Envision extensible and efficient methods for 3D content creation in a game environment
- Knowledge: Strong understanding of modern real-time engines and a variety of tools (including Maya and Blender)
- Skills: High proficiency and expertise in character skinning, physics, and technical workflows within real-time engines and DCC
- Strong knowledge of character kinematics, deformations, and topology
- Strong emphasis creative problem solving, communication, and collaboration skills
- Familiarity with Lua, Mel, and/or Python a plus
- Familiarity with industry standard product design processes a plus
For roles that are based at our headquarters in San Mateo, CA: The starting base pay for this position is as shown below. The actual base pay is dependent upon a variety of job-related factors such as professional background, training, work experience, location, business needs and market demand. Therefore, in some circumstances, the actual salary could fall outside of this expected range. This pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. All full-time employees are also eligible for equity compensation and for benefits as described on this page.
Roles that are based in an office are onsite Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, with optional presence on Monday and Friday (unless otherwise noted).
