About the role
We are looking for a motivated, experienced Product Counsel to join our legal team. In this role, you will act as a strategic partner to our Product & Engineering and Revenue teams to work on exciting legal issues where disruptive technological innovations require creative and proactive legal guidance. You will be an embedded thought partner, helping us build innovative products and features that move the retirement industry forward. The successful candidate will thrive at the intersection of law and technology/financial services, guiding product development cycles and cross-functional decision-making.
What you get to do every day
- Full Lifecycle Counseling: Partner with business teams to provide legal and strategic advice from development to launch on new or enhanced products, features, and services. Translate complex regulatory requirements into clear, actionable guidance and tools that non-legal stakeholders can easily understand and implement in roadmaps and feature planning.
- Regulatory Strategy: Build strong relationships across teams to ensure compliance with applicable federal and state laws and regulations in the fintech industry, including consumer protection and data security. Monitor new regulations and changes to existing regulatory requirements that have the potential to impact the business.
- Customer-Facing Communications: Review customer-facing disclosures and promotional materials to ensure compliance with all applicable regulations.
- Cross-team Collaboration: Respond promptly to a wide range of complex legal requests, identify issues and coordinate closely with legal and compliance colleagues to ensure the swift delivery of smart, practical advice.
What you bring to the role
- Business Pragmatist: You have direct experience providing legal advice on how to launch products responsibly and sustainably and demonstrate excellent judgment.
- A Trusted Advisor: You are capable of influencing decision-making, providing strategic legal advice on key business decisions. You have a strong sense of ownership and the ability to demonstrate sound judgment in ambiguous situations
- Collaborative: You have the ability to work collaboratively and strategically with strong decision-making skills. You build cross-functional relationships with communication styles that resonate with business teams.
- Clear Communicator: You possess excellent communication skills with the ability to explain complex issues with clarity in writing and in meetings to a variety of audiences.
Qualifications
- Education: J.D., LL.B., or equivalent degree.
- Licensure: Admitted to the bar and in good standing, or otherwise authorized to practice law (e.g., registered in-house status) in any state.
- Experience:
- 7-10+ years of relevant legal experience, preferably in-house at a consumer financial services business, fintech, or technology company
- Experience providing legal advice on product development
- Subject Matter Knowledge: Familiarity with laws and regulations applicable to financial services and technology, such as UDAAP, Investment Advisers Act, ERISA, or consumer protection or data security frameworks.
Nice to have
- Direct experience supporting fintech products or B2B or consumer financial services from development to launch.
- Expertise in risk management, compliance, and regulatory frameworks as they relate to the retirement or wealth management industry.
- Knowledge of ERISA, investment advisers act, privacy, consumer protection, data security, UX/UI, and/or IP legal issues in a fintech context.
- Demonstrated ability to balance compliance obligations with business objectives in a fast-paced, high-growth, or evolving regulatory environment.
- Strong familiarity with legal workflows related to knowledge search, risk and compliance, document automation, and AI.

Compensation - At Human Interest, there are a number of factors that are used to determine the appropriate pay range for each position. We take into account the cost of labor for each position in various markets across the U.S. The base salary for this position spans $185,000 - $225,000 and represents the minimum in our lowest geographic region to a maximum in our highest geographic region. The salary we offer to a new employee within this range is based on their location within the U.S., their relevant job-related skills, and experience. At Human Interest, base salary is one component of the overall total rewards package. Depending on the position, additional compensation components such as bonuses, commissions, and equity may be offered.
