Manager, Software Engineering

About the role

We’re looking for an experienced Engineering Manager to lead our backend engineering team and help shape the future of our Search and Recommendations Platform. In this role, you will build and optimize the technology that powers two core aspects of the anime fan experience on Crunchyroll—search relevance and personalized recommendations—directly influencing how users discover and engage with our extensive content library. You’ll collaborate closely with product, design, and cross-functional partners, including data analytics, platform engineering, and service monetization, to deliver scalable, flexible solutions.

As Engineering Manager, you will report to the Senior Director, Software Engineering in the Fan Experiences Engineering group. This is a hybrid position based out of our Hyderabad office.

About You

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
• 8+ years of engineering in building cloud-native applications, with a strong focus on backend development and microservices architecture.
• 2+ years of experience in managing and leading engineering teams
• Proficiency in programming languages such as Typescript, Go, Java, Python, and experience with modern frameworks and technologies.
• Experience in launching large-scale consumer-facing applications.
• Strong understanding of the AWS cloud platforms and experience in building scalable, reliable, and secure cloud-native applications.
• Strong observability experience and skills, enabling you to drive reliability, performance, and deep system insights across the platform.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a keen attention to foresee long-term product goals and define an engineering roadmap.
• Excellent cross-functional skills — able to partner with Product, Data, and Business teams.

A day in the life of our Software Engineering Manager:

• Lead and mentor a team of software engineers to ensure the adoption of best practices, architectural standards, and scalability, fostering a collaborative and high-performance work environment.
• Run the day-to-day operations of the engineering team, including managing scrum ceremonies such as grooming, sprint planning, daily stand-ups, and retrospectives.
• Collaborate with product and leadership to define and execute the development roadmap, aligning with business objectives and customer needs.
• Work closely with stakeholders and cross-functional teams to understand requirements, gather feedback, and communicate project progress and status updates to deliver high-quality solutions.
• Manage project timelines, resource allocation, and budgets to ensure timely, successful project delivery.
• Conduct regular one-to-one meetings with team members to provide feedback, support their career development, and address any challenges or concerns.
• Monitor team performance and productivity, identify areas for improvement, and implement strategies to optimize efficiency.
• Actively participate in hiring and onboarding processes to attract top talent and build a skilled engineering team.
