The Role:
We're seeking a motivated and hands-on Manager, Data Center Operations to establish and lead our first data center team in India. This is a foundational role where you'll be responsible for building a team from the ground up, overseeing the setup and day-to-day operations of our new enterprise-grade facility. You will be a key leader in ensuring the stability, scalability, and security of our physical infrastructure and device farm environments in the region. This role requires a strong technical background, excellent leadership skills, and the ability to operate both strategically and tactically in a fast-paced environment.
Responsibilities:
Site Establishment & Team Leadership:
- Serve as the first on-site data center operations hire, responsible for the initial setup and build-out of the facility.
- Build, mentor, and lead a new team of data center engineers and technicians.
- Oversee daily operations, manage shift schedules, and ensure staffing levels meet operational demands.
- Conduct performance reviews and provide ongoing coaching and development opportunities for your team.
Data Center Operations:
- Manage the full lifecycle of data center infrastructure, including deployment, maintenance, and decommissioning of mobile devices, Macs, servers, storage, and networking equipment.
- Lead the implementation and enforcement of operational best practices, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and runbooks.
- Ensure all infrastructure changes and maintenance are planned and executed with minimal disruption.
Device Farm Management
- Hands-on implementation, management and maintenance of iOS and Android mobile devices deployed in a Linux based testing environment.
- Device and infrastructure deployment utilizing custom and CI/CD pipeline methods (Jenkins, GitLab, Github, etc).
- Support mobile and infrastructure teams in debugging device connectivity, performance, and compatibility issues across Android, iOS, and Linux.
Infrastructure Management & Planning:
- Collaborate with global leadership and engineering teams to plan for capacity needs and infrastructure growth.
- Oversee the management of the local device farm, ensuring high availability and performance for mobile testing..
- Manage environmental conditions, including temperature, humidity, and airflow, to protect hardware and ensure optimal performance.
Vendor & Logistics Management:
- Establish and maintain relationships with local and global vendors, suppliers, and service providers.
- Manage equipment logistics, inventory control, and asset management for the local data center.
- Lead the planning and execution of projects, manage budgets, and adhere to timelines.
Security & Compliance:
- Implement and enforce physical security protocols, including access controls, visitor logs, and vendor escorts.
- Ensure all data center operations comply with internal security policies and relevant industry standards.
- Own and maintain controls for external audits, such as SOC2 and ISO27001, and work with both internal and external auditors.
Incident Management & Support:
- Act as the primary point of escalation for all data center incidents and issues in the region.
- Lead incident response and root cause analysis efforts, providing detailed reports to senior management.
Collaboration:
- Represent the India data center team in cross-functional meetings, ensuring the needs and capabilities of your new site are aligned with global SRE, Security, and Development initiatives.
Required Skills:
- 5+ years of experience in data center operations, with 2+ years in a leadership or managerial role.
- Proven experience in building and leading technical teams.
- Understanding of data center infrastructure, including power, cooling, and design principles.
- Hands-on experience with server hardware, storage, and networking equipment (e.g., Dell, Cisco).
- Expertise in MacOS and Linux system administration and command-line tools.
- Experience with Scripting and Automation tools.
- Network infrastructure experience including both copper and fiber optic networks.
- Foundational knowledge of TCP/IP networking, DNS, and DHCP.
- Ability to work both strategically and tactically in a fast-paced, high-demand environment.
Nice to Haves:
- Bachelor’s degree in a technical field or equivalent work experience.
- Direct experience managing a device farm or mobile testing lab.
- Familiarity with the India data center market and local regulations.
