About the Role

The IT Systems Engineer is a mid-level individual contributor responsible for operating, improving, and supporting Betterment’s core IT systems. This role focuses on reliable execution, systems administration, and workflow automation within an established IT architecture.

You will own defined platforms and processes, partner closely with senior engineers and security teams, and contribute to improving employee experience through dependable systems and thoughtful automation. This role is ideal for an engineer who is comfortable working independently on scoped problems and is growing toward senior-level systems ownership.

This role is based out of our NYC office. Below we've reflected the base salary range for this position. Actual salaries may vary depending on factors including but not limited to location, experience, and performance. The range listed is just one component of Betterment’s total compensation package for employees. 

New York City: $105,000 - 120,000

This job may also be eligible for variable compensation in the form of a company incentive bonus. 

A Day in the Life:

IT Systems & SaaS Operations

  • Administer and support core SaaS platforms such as Google Workspace, Okta, Slack, Zoom, Jamf and other business systems.

  • Execute user lifecycle processes including onboarding, role changes, and offboarding using established identity and access workflows.

  • Maintain system configurations, group structures, and access models according to documented standards.

  • Monitor system health and proactively address operational issues before they impact employees.

Identity & Access Management

  • Support identity and access management processes including SSO, MFA, RBAC, and group-based access.

  • Implement access changes and integrations under the guidance of senior engineers and security partners.

  • Participate in periodic access reviews and remediation efforts.

  • Assist with troubleshooting authentication, provisioning, and access-related issues.

Automation & Process Improvement

  • Automate repeatable IT tasks using scripting tools such as Python or Bash.

  • Improve existing onboarding, offboarding, and support workflows to reduce manual effort.

  • Contribute to documentation and runbooks for IT systems and operational procedures.

  • Follow infrastructure-as-code and configuration standards where applicable.

Device & Endpoint Management

  • Support macOS endpoint management including device provisioning, configuration, patching, and compliance.

  • Execute MDM policies and OS updates based on defined standards.

  • Provide limited support for Windows endpoints where required.

  • Troubleshoot endpoint issues and escalate complex problems appropriately.

Employee Support & Collaboration

  • Serve as a reliable escalation point for complex IT Support issues.

  • Partner with People Operations, Security, and Finance on day-to-day IT needs.

  • Deliver predictable, high-quality support to employees across time zones.

  • Maintain clear, accurate documentation for systems and support processes.

What We’re Looking For:  

Technical Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience in Information Systems, Technology, or a related field.

  • 3 to 5 years of experience in IT systems administration, SaaS operations, or enterprise technology support.

  • Working experience with macOS administration and endpoint management.

  • Hands-on experience with Okta or similar identity providers.

  • Familiarity with identity standards such as SAML, OIDC, SCIM, and role-based access concepts.

  • Basic to intermediate scripting experience using Python, Bash, or similar tools.

Nice to Have

  • Exposure to compliance or audit-related IT processes (SOC 2, SOX, ISO).

  • Experience working in a regulated or high-growth environment.

  • Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code concepts or tools.

What happens next

We’ll take a few weeks to review all applications. If we’d like to spend more time with you, we’ll reach out to arrange next steps, which will include 3-4 sets of meetings with your future colleagues.

In the interview process, we’ll look to learn more about your skills, experiences, capabilities, and motivators. Many of our questions will be aimed at understanding how you might operate here at Betterment. Depending on the role, we may ask you to complete a case study exercise or technical assessments, as we want to collect a robust set of data points to better inform our decisions.

On average, it takes us around 3-5 weeks to make a hiring decision, depending on your availability and sense of urgency. As a best practice, we aim to interview at least 2-3 final round candidates before making a hiring decision. Please note that, as we usually receive an overwhelming number of  applications for open positions, we’re unable to offer individual feedback during the interview process.
