Marqeta

IT Software Asset Management Lead

at Marqeta

Toronto, Vancouver, Canada

We're building a dedicated Asset Lifecycle Management (ALM) program and this role is central to it. As the Software Asset Management Lead, you'll own the strategy and execution for how Marqeta governs its software assets — from SaaS licenses and cloud software to shadow IT.

This is an individual contributor role with significant scope and visibility. You will define the processes, implement the tooling, and build the discipline that gives the organization accurate, actionable visibility into its software estate. You'll work cross-functionally with Cybersecurity, Finance, Procurement, and IT Operations, and your work will directly impact Marqeta's security posture, compliance readiness, and technology spend and cost savings.

We work Flexible First. This role can be performed remotely anywhere within Ontario or British Columbia, Canada. We’d love for you to join us!

This position is not for an existing vacancy.

The Impact You’ll Have

  • SaaS Asset Governance & Lifecycle Management

    • Develop and implement the end-to-end software asset management lifecycle, from pre-procurement through decommissioning, for all software categories.
    • Establish and maintain a comprehensive software inventory across the organization, consolidating data from multiple existing tools into a unified, reliable view.
    • Proactively manage the decommissioning of end-of-life (EOL) and end-of-support (EOS) software assets to reduce technology debt and risk.
    • Develop and enforce software asset management policies, standards, and procedures aligned with industry best practices and Marqeta's regulatory requirements.
    • Define and govern software classification, ownership models, and risk ratings to support security and compliance decision-making.
    • Partner with the Architecture Review Board, Cybersecurity, Procurement, and Finance teams in overall governance design.
  • SaaS Management & Shadow IT Reduction

    • Develop and execute comprehensive software management strategies to eliminate shadow IT and reduce duplicative capabilities.
    • Lead SaaS sprawl management initiatives to optimize software licensing, reduce costs, and improve security posture.
    • Collaborate with procurement teams to implement pre-procurement technology request approval processes.
    • Implement software asset governance programs that ensure compliance with licensing agreements and usage policies.
  • License Optimization & Cost Management
    • Implement software license compliance programs ensuring adherence to vendor agreements and usage policies.
    • Track and analyze software utilization data to identify optimization opportunities, eliminate shelfware, and right-size license commitments at renewal.
    • Develop metrics and reporting frameworks that give leadership clear visibility into software spend, utilization rates, compliance posture, and cost-saving opportunities.
  • Tooling & Automation

    • Define and execute Marqeta's software asset management tooling strategy, rationalizing the current fragmented landscape into a coherent, scalable platform approach.
    • Partner with IT Operations and Cybersecurity to implement automated discovery, inventory, and compliance monitoring capabilities.
    • Maintain and continuously improve the software asset management platform (ServiceNow, Oomnitza, or similar) as the authoritative system of record.
  • Reporting & Stakeholder Engagement

    • Build and maintain executive-grade dashboards that translate software asset data into business outcomes: cost optimization, risk reduction, and compliance readiness.
    • Report regularly to IT leadership on software portfolio health, compliance status, and program progress.
    • Serve as the subject matter expert and point of escalation for all software asset management questions across the organization.

Who You Are

  • 7+ years of experience in software asset management or IT asset management, with demonstrated depth in SaaS management and software license optimizations.
  • Hands-on experience building or significantly maturing a software asset management program, not just operating within one.
  • Strong knowledge of software licensing models, compliance requirements, and vendor management.
  • Proficiency with ITAM/SAM platforms such as ServiceNow, Oomnitza, or comparable tools.
  • Experience with software asset tagging strategies, and automated discovery tools.
  • Demonstrated success identifying and remediating shadow IT and SaaS sprawl at scale.
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration skills — you'll work across Cybersecurity, Procurement, Finance, and IT Operations on a regular basis.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, with demonstrated experience translating complex software asset data into clear financial and risk narratives for executive leadership.
  • High attention to detail with strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Change management experience and ability to drive process improvements across the organization.
  • Relevant certifications such as Certified Software Asset Manager (CSAM), ITIL Foundation, or equivalent preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Business Administration, or related field.

Nice-To-Haves

  • Master's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field.
  • Experience in financial services, fintech, or highly regulated industries.
  • Familiarity with hardware and /or cloud asset management and tagging strategies.
  • Experience presenting to or partnering with an Architecture Review Board or similar governance body.
  • Project management certifications (PMP, Agile) are advantageous.
