Take the Lead in Global Trade
The opportunity
As a Senior Customs Specialist, you’ve moved beyond the fundamentals and this role reflects that. You’ll be a critical contributor on our core Customs team, a product poised for more than 10x growth in the next five years, bringing both operational excellence and strategic insight to everything you do.
In this role, you’ll own a book of business, navigate complex entries end-to-end, and serve as a trusted resource for clients, partners, and teammates alike. You’ll use Flexport’s state-of-the-art technology to streamline customs processes, mentor those around you, and help shape the procedures that guide the entire team. If you’re ready to deepen your expertise, expand your impact, and grow into a thought leader in customs brokerage, this is your next step.
What you’ll do
- Own complex entry filing: Handle a high-volume, high-accuracy workload by filing moderately complex entries end-to-end, including entries with unique procedures, detailed PGA requirements, and non-standard processes while maintaining strict accuracy standards.
- Serve as account lead: Be the first point of contact for your assigned book of business or paired accounts, responding to demand inquiries, resolving escalations, and fostering strong, trusted relationships with clients and logistics partners.
- Keep the queue running: Resolve errors daily, troubleshoot entry rejections and exceptions, identify missing information, keep the entire queue moving efficiently, and help junior team members work through their own issues.
- Drive compliance and accuracy: Use authoritative sources to navigate regulatory requirements, update and create complex SOPs with proper citations, and explain compliance issues clearly to clients and internal stakeholders.
- Support client success: Facilitate smooth client onboarding, lead on-site QBRs, and create customized reporting to provide clients and internal stakeholders with actionable insights.
- Develop the team around you: Contribute to team development by helping train new employees, providing ongoing training on client procedures and SOPs, and overseeing work queue distribution at the direction of the manager.
- Contribute to Flexport’s growth: Submit tickets to and work directly with engineering and product teams on BRDs, testing, and quality feedback, answer CBP inquiries and coordinate with the compliance team as needed, and support broader customs organization initiatives as assigned.
This role is for you if you…
- Have proven customs experience: External hires bring a minimum of 2 years (recommended 3+) of hands-on entry filing experience.
- Are operationally proficient end-to-end: You can file and troubleshoot moderately complex entries independently, cite authoritative customs sources, update SOPs, run reports, and explain entry concepts clearly to clients and teammates.
- Lead with a compliance-first mindset: You hold yourself to the highest standards of regulatory adherence, file with high accuracy, and treat errors as unacceptable.
- Are humble and always learning: You know what you don’t know, escalate questions at the right time, and proactively seek answers rather than repeating the same questions documenting and sharing your learnings with the team.
- Communicate with confidence: You can speak confidently with medium-sized, higher-stakes audiences, whether assisting on a sales call, explaining a complex customs issue, or leading a QBR. Communication is always professional both in writing and verbally.
- Are highly organized and team-oriented: You manage your workload efficiently enough to regularly assist teammates, volunteer before day’s end, and contribute to broader team or organization initiatives without sacrificing your core responsibilities.
- Are solutions-oriented: You identify process gaps and address them directly, propose creative solutions, and approach every problem with urgency, accuracy, and a drive to move to the next challenge.
