Director, Product Marketing
at Descript
San Francisco, United States
About the Role
As a Product Marketing Director at Descript, you will play a pivotal role in bringing our AI-native video editing platform to new customers. Your team will define and execute campaigns that fill our sales pipeline, and full-funnel GTM campaigns that reach self-serve customers. Together, these efforts will allow Descript to reach the next phase of our company growth in a fast-changing, and exciting category.
Your team will understand the industry, our prospects, and customers deeply. You will ensure the Product Marketing function is a center of strategic excellence— able to represent the voices of prospects and customers, their motivations, use cases, and existing workflows. Through this expertise, your team will also lead work that helps existing customers deepen their usage, adopt new features, and increase their usage.
Collaborating closely with cross-functional teams, you will define distinctive and memorable ways to position Descript’s offering, and develop campaigns that bring to life our most differentiating features.
This role directly manages multiple Product Marketers, and reports to the Head of Marketing.
What You’ll Do
- Fill the funnel and generate pipeline: You’ll establish an enterprise marketing strategy that coordinates paid, content, and event strategies to ensure we’re educating the market on Descript’s enterprise offering, and bringing in high-quality leads.
- Campaigns that drive self-serve growth & engagement: You’ll partner with the Growth team to drive efficient acquisition of self-serve audiences, with a particular focus on customers who will make video at work and with their teammates. You’ll partner with content, design, and community to drive feature adoption and retention.
- Leverage Descript’s customers & relationships to drive growth: You’ll lead the team in developing always-on channels that leverage the stature, expertise, and experience of our partners and customers to build authority and visibility in the market. You will find ways to elevate the success of our self-serve customers, so that their projects serve as proof points for Descript’s product benefits.
- Positioning & Messaging: You’ll guide the Product Marketing team’s approach to positioning our offering in the crowded landscape of creative tools, and crisply articulating the benefits of our features— with a particular focus on communicators who can use Descript in their teams.
- Brand-building in the AI landscape: You’ll help define, articulate, and continuously reinforce Descript’s perspective on how AI should show up in creative workflows.
- Audience knowhow: You’ll help build internal understanding of priority personas, and create resources that help cross-functional collaborators understand their needs.
- Be the marketing bridge to product: You will ensure that you—and all the Product Marketing Managers—have the operational habits and relationships in place to work in lockstep with the engineering, product, and design teams.
What You Bring
- Deep expertise: 15+ years as a proven product marketing leader, with experience working in SaaS business and marketing technical products. Ideally you have some experience in a startup environment. Campaigns you’ve developed and led have made an impact on a sales pipeline and self-serve growth.
- Experience developing teams: 7+ years of people-management, that have informed thoughtful approaches to helping team members learn, explore, and do their best work.
- An active style that makes you influential: You have opinions, you provoke good conversation, you make yourself and your team visible, known, and trusted
- An ownership mindset: Broad curiosity and interest in the technical and user-facing aspects of a product; a commitment to craft and an eagle-eye for detail; a supernatural ability to see around corners.
- Flawless communication: In cross-functional relationships, in strategy documentation, in campaign analysis and guidance for improvement…your written and verbal communication is clear and galvanizing.
- Fluency using self-serve data tools to make decisions: You make Hex and Amplitude dashboards in your sleep. And you know how to ask the right questions of Data Science and Research collaborators.
Bonus strengths
- Fluency with creative tools
- Keeping up with the internet zeitgeist, and knowing how to ride the waves
The base salary range for this role is $220,000-250,000. Final offer amounts will carefully consider multiple factors, including prior experience, expertise, and location, and they may vary from the amount above.
