About the role

We are hiring a Director of Engineering, Monetization Platform to join the Service Monetization organization and lead the long-term platform investment required to scale Crunchyroll’s monetization systems for future growth.

Reporting to the Vice President of Engineering, Service Monetization, this leader will own strategy and execution for the shared monetization foundation across platform scalability, reliability, observability, compliance, service modernization, architectural simplification, infrastructure efficiency, and high-ROI refactoring of critical systems.

Their mission will be to help Crunchyroll’s platform scale to 50M fans by strengthening the monetization systems that support subscription growth, revenue operations, and dependable fan experiences at global scale.

This role is intentionally platform-first rather than feature-first. It exists to create the conditions for our product-facing domains to move quickly while ensuring the monetization foundation remains dependable, scalable, secure, and aligned to the company’s long-term growth ambitions.

This leader will also partner closely with Data Insights and Enterprise Technology organizations to ensure Service Monetization data, services, controls, and operational foundations reliably support internal business operations across reporting, finance, accounting, and compliance.

We are considering applicants for Hyderabad, India. This team is intended to serve as a strategic center of excellence for long-term monetization platform engineering while remaining tightly connected to global partners and business needs.

This is a unique opportunity for an experienced engineering leader who enjoys building strong organizations, driving platform strategy, and improving the reliability and leverage of systems that are directly tied to revenue and company scale.

Core Areas of Responsibility

  • Define the strategy, roadmap, and operating model for the Monetization Platform domain, aligning platform investments with business priorities, customer needs, and future scale requirements.
  • Lead multiple teams and workstreams across scalability, reliability, modernization, compliance readiness, observability, and platform simplification.
  • Own platform SLOs and drive measurable improvements in availability, latency, error rates, incident frequency, infrastructure efficiency, and internal partner integration reliability.
  • Prioritize the portfolio of work within the domain using clear tradeoffs across business dependency, operational risk, technical debt, compliance exposure, internal partner impact, and long-term platform health.
  • Build and lead a high-performing organization by strengthening manager capability, clarifying ownership, creating effective operating mechanisms, and reducing single points of failure across people, systems, and processes.
  • Partner closely with adjacent domains, Acquisition & Conversion and Membership & Retention, through shared planning and governance so platform needs are addressed deliberately without slowing business-critical delivery.
  • Establish strong standards for service ownership, operational documentation, onboarding, observability, and engineering quality across the organization.
  • Hold leaders accountable for building secure, reliable, and scalable systems, surfacing systemic risks early, and driving cross-team improvements before issues impact the business or our fans.
  • Hire, grow, and retain strong managers and senior engineers, while creating equitable opportunities for development, internal mobility, and long-term organizational health.
  • Serve as a strong cross-functional partner who can influence without authority, align stakeholders around strategy, and communicate clearly through ambiguity and change.

About You

  • You have 12+ years of software engineering experience building large-scale, cloud-native, distributed systems, with strong depth in backend and platform engineering.
  • You have significant experience leading engineering organizations through managers, and you know how to scale teams, operating mechanisms, and decision-making across multiple workstreams.
  • You have experience defining strategy and executing roadmaps over six to twelve month horizons in environments with meaningful technical and organizational ambiguity.
  • You are comfortable owning reliability, scalability, observability, and operational excellence for critical systems, and you know how to turn those expectations into team habits and measurable outcomes.
  • You have strong technical judgment and can review the health and quality of a system portfolio, guide architectural tradeoffs, and partner effectively with senior engineers on long-term technical direction.
  • You are an experienced people leader who can hire outstanding talent, coach managers and senior engineers, and create a healthy, high-accountability culture across teams.
  • You are an excellent cross-functional collaborator and communicator who can work effectively with Product, Data, Enterprise Technology, Finance, Compliance, and peer engineering leaders across geographies.
  • You bring strong experience with modern cloud platforms, APIs, microservices, data stores, and the operational tooling needed to run secure and resilient services at scale.
  • You stay current on business context, customer needs, and market dynamics, and you use that context to shape technical priorities and platform investments.
  • Optionally you have experience building or evolving platforms in domains such as subscriptions, payments, billing, monetization, compliance, or other revenue-critical systems.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

About the Team

The Service Monetization organization is structured around three domains: Acquisition & Conversion, Membership & Retention, and Monetization Platform.

The Monetization Platform domain is the shared engineering foundation for monetization at Crunchyroll. It exists to ensure our monetization systems can support future growth, rather than relying on short-term feature teams to address foundational work opportunistically.

This team owns the platform capabilities that matter most for long-term leverage: scalability, reliability, observability, compliance, service modernization, architectural simplification, infrastructure efficiency, and dependable internal integrations.

Its mission is to build a monetization platform that can support the next stage of Crunchyroll’s growth, including an ambition to support 50 million fans over time.
