About the role

Seeking an experienced, innovative Director of Information Technology to define strategy, implement and optimize IT infrastructure, internal systems, enterprise applications, and service delivery company-wide. Responsible for operational excellence, developing an IT roadmap supporting company growth, executing digital and business transformation, and ensuring world-class security, compliance, and efficiency. Acts as both a strategic leadership partner and a hands-on driver of innovation, resilience, and growth. Requires experience with cloud-native infrastructure in regulated industries.

This role is based out of our NYC office. For jobs based out of our NYC HQ, we require in office attendance Tuesday through Thursday, weekly. Below we've reflected the base salary range we would offer for this position. Actual salaries may vary depending on factors including but not limited to location, experience, and performance. The range listed is just one component of Betterment’s total compensation package for employees. 

  • New York City: $170,000 - $210,000

This job may also be eligible for variable compensation in the form of a company incentive bonus.

 

A day in the life

  • Lead IT strategy, governance, and compliance to meet industry standards and regulations
  • Represent IT in executive forums to influence company strategy and investments
  • Oversee collaboration suites, ERP, and HRIS supporting business operations
  • Govern identity and access management with Okta and federated systems
  • Manage IT budgets and vendors: source, negotiate, review quarterly, and align partner roadmaps
  • Drive digital tool adoption through user training, change management, and staff development
  • Oversee full IT initiative lifecycle; ensure alignment with business priorities
  • Mentor and grow IT Support and Systems Engineering teams, focusing on succession and leadership
  • Partner with Engineering, Security, Workplace Experience, and other teams to deliver impactful tech solutions
  • Evaluate, select, and implement cloud tech for scale, security, and compliance
  • Architect and scale IT infrastructure, SaaS, and collaboration platforms for hybrid/distributed workforces
  • Oversee IT’s business continuity and disaster recovery; ensure enterprise resilience
  • Define and track IT operational metrics (SLAs, KPIs, resilience benchmarks); ensure reliable, impactful IT services

 

What we’re looking for

  • 10+ years progressive IT experience, 5+ at the leadership level, preferably in cloud-native, high-growth settings
  • Deep expertise in enterprise IT: productivity, ERP (NetSuite), HRIS (ADP), security, cloud, and networking
  • Knowledge of emerging tech: generative/agentic AI, automation, business continuity/disaster recovery
  • Proven experience with IT budget ownership, cost optimization and vendor management
  • Successful track record scaling IT for >500-person hybrid/distributed teams
  • Experience in highly regulated environments
  • Exceptional communication: translate technical concepts for diverse audiences
  • Strong leadership and team-building across technical and non-technical groups
  • Hands-on experience with ITSM tools, modern IT practices, and SaaS/cloud platforms (AWS, Google Workspace, Atlassian, Okta, ServiceNow, Zendesk)
  • Advanced skills: Jamf and Okta, security and compliance frameworks, audit, and controls
  • Deep expertise with cloud identity management and endpoint security
  • Familiar with compliance frameworks (ISO 27001, PCI DSS, etc.) for SaaS/FinTech companies
  • SDLC understanding; capable of strong partnership with Engineering

Nice to haves

  • Relevant certifications (CISSP, CISM, AWS Solution Architect, or equivalent)
  • SaaS portfolio rationalization and license optimization
  • Experience integrating/scaling HRIS/ERP systems (Eg. Workday, BambooHR, NetSuite, Greenhouse)
  • Delivery of AI-enabled IT initiatives (AI service desk, copilots, automated governance)
  • AV/hybrid collaboration and enterprise event support leadership
  • ITIL certification/advanced ITSM training (ITIL v4, Practitioner, etc.)
  • Project management certifications (PMP, PRINCE2, CSM)
  • Scripting (Bash, Python) for automation/systems management
  • RBAC implementation and management across enterprise apps
  • Experience leading CAB and incident management
  • Familiar with NIST and CIS security frameworks for enterprise IT

What happens next

In the interview process, we’ll look to learn more about your skills, experiences, capabilities, and motivators. Many of our questions will be aimed at understanding how you might operate here at Betterment. Depending on the role, we may ask you to complete a case study exercise or technical assessments, as we want to collect a robust set of data points to better inform our decisions.

On average, it takes us around 3-5 weeks to make a hiring decision, depending on your availability and sense of urgency. As a best practice, we aim to interview at least 2-3 final round candidates before making a hiring decision.
