Director, Data Science & Analytics
at CircleCI
San Francisco, Toronto, Canada, United States
Director of Data Science & Analytics
The Opportunity
We're looking for a Director of Data Science & Analytics to further build and lead our insights engine. This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who can operate across the full spectrum of analytics and data science—from ad hoc deep dives to ML models in production. You'll be a strategic partner to both Product and GTM leadership, bringing data-driven rigor to how we build products, acquire customers, and grow revenue.
This role is for a builder and disruptor. You'll inherit a solid foundation and be expected to level up the team with modern methodologies, emerging tools, and techniques that keep us ahead. If you geek out about experimentation frameworks, get excited about productionizing ML models, and believe analytics should drive decisions (not just report on them), we want to talk. The Data team at CircleCI is outcome-driven and impact-focused and has a seat at the table with functional leadership.
What You'll Own
Strategic Leadership
- Serve as the analytics and data science thought partner to Product, Engineering, and GTM leadership—translating business questions into analytical frameworks and actionable insights
- Define the vision and roadmap for how CircleCI uses data to make decisions, from product development to customer acquisition to retention
- Build a culture of intellectual rigor, curiosity, and bias toward action
Analytics Excellence
- Lead a team where ~80% of the work is ad hoc analysis and deep investigation—answering the hard questions that don't fit neatly into a dashboard
- Drive our experimentation program: design methodology, statistical rigor, and organizational adoption
- Own the ~20% of reporting work with an eye toward self-service and scalability—build it once, build it right
Data Science & ML
- Oversee ML modeling initiatives across product and GTM use cases (propensity models, churn prediction, usage forecasting, recommendations)
- Guide the team's emerging work in AI prompt engineering and context engineering as we explore AI-powered features
- Ensure models move from notebooks to production with proper monitoring, maintenance, and business integration
Team Building
- Lead and develop two managers (GTM Analytics, Product Analytics) and their teams—approximately 10 people total
- Raise the bar on talent, methodology, and delivery across the organization
- Foster collaboration with our Data Platform & Solutions team (who builds the infrastructure you depend on) and GTM Systems team (who operationalizes insights in tools like HubSpot, Vitally, and Zendesk)
What You Bring
Deep Expertise Across the Stack
- 10+ years in analytics, data science, or related fields with 4+ years leading teams
- Genuine fluency across product analytics, GTM/marketing analytics, experimentation, and ML—you've done the work, not just managed it
- Strong SQL skills and hands-on experience with Python for analysis and modeling
- Experience with modern analytics and ML tooling (we use Snowflake, dbt, Mode, and are looking to you to help evaluate next-gen AI/BI tools)
Strategic & Business Acumen
- Track record of influencing product and business strategy through data—not just answering questions but reframing them
- Experience in B2B SaaS, ideally with product-led growth or developer-focused products
- Comfort with ambiguity and the ability to structure problems in messy, fast-moving environments
Leadership & Influence
- Experience building and scaling analytics/data science teams at growth-stage companies
- Ability to attract, develop, and retain strong talent
- Credibility to partner with senior Product and Engineering leaders as a peer, not just a service provider
- Strong communicator who can translate complex analysis into clear narratives for technical and non-technical audiences
Disruptor Mindset
- Genuine curiosity about emerging tools, techniques, and ways of working
- Willingness to challenge the status quo and push the team (and organization) to adopt better approaches
- Opinions about where analytics and data science are headed—and energy to get us there
Nice to Have
- Experience with CI/CD, DevOps, or developer tools
- Background in building experimentation platforms or frameworks
- Familiarity with reverse ETL and data activation patterns
- Experience with LLMs and AI/ML productionization
Why CircleCI
- Shape the data strategy for a category-defining developer tools company
- Build and lead a team doing meaningful, high-impact work
- Partner with exceptional Product and GTMleaders who value data
- Competitive compensation, equity, and benefits
- Remote-first culture with flexibility and autonomy
