About the role
The Analytics team at Betterment is deeply integrated across the organization, forming strong strategic partnerships with nearly every function, including Product, Marketing, Engineering, Finance, Operations, and Sales. The team's primary function is to transform data into actionable insights that directly drive our company's strategy and execution priorities. They coordinate closely with stakeholders and senior leadership, ensuring that business priorities are based on informed decisions and influencing critical choices with their unique, data-driven perspective.
The Director of Analytics is tasked with aligning the Analytics team's efforts with the company's highest-level goals. This involves:
- Setting Vision & Strategy: Defining and executing on team roadmaps that influence organization-wide strategic direction. You will anticipate future organizational gaps and implement solutions to close them.
- Strategic Coordination: Partnering with senior leaders across Betterment to ensure the team is focused on the most impactful projects with maximum efficiency.
- Team Leadership & Development: Building a high-performing analytics team. You will focus on coaching your team to their highest impact.
- Technical Leadership: Maintaining a deep understanding of the core technologies used by the team. You will focus on technical enablement and connecting team members to domain owners, while serving as a technical anchor—ready to step in and contribute to high-stakes projects or complex problem-solving when needed.
- Storytelling & Influence: Serving as the most visible "face" of the Analytics organization. You will synthesize complex data into a cohesive narrative that identifies opportunities across lines of business.
This role requires both: a strong technical background to accurately assess the scope and effort of various initiatives, as well as exceptional communication and executive presence to effectively partner with peers and influence C-suite decisions.
This role is based out of our NYC office. For jobs based out of our NYC HQ, we require in office attendance Monday through Thursday, weekly. Below we've reflected the base salary range we would offer for this position. Actual salaries may vary depending on factors including but not limited to location, experience, and performance. The range listed is just one component of Betterment’s total compensation package for employees.
- New York City: $194,000 - $215,000

This job may also be eligible for variable compensation in the form of a company incentive bonus.
A day in the life
- Manage the day-to-day execution of the Analytics team
- Conduct the team’s standup, gaining context on progress, blockers, and shifts in priority
- Have a 1 on 1 discussing career growth with a direct report
- Assist a junior team member in a conversation regarding how best to visualize a particular finding
- Catch up with the VP of Data and Engineering leads to communicate requirements for a new data domain
- Partner with stakeholders and leadership around the company to influence decision making
- Discuss upcoming campaigns with the VP of Marketing, ensuring that we’re primed to measure the impact to cross sell and LTV growth
- Attend a product kickoff meeting, advising on bias potential in the AB testing plan
- Meet with the VP of Data and CEO to discuss Company OKR progress
- Present a plan to update key metrics definitions to the Finance team, and strategize on rollout
- Perform a quick ad-hoc analysis to help the VP of Finance tailor the annual financial plan
What we’re looking for
- 10+ years of experience working in Analytics, preferably at a tech company with a web-based product and in close partnership with decision makers
- 5+ years of experience directly managing a team of 5+ analytics professionals
- Passion for solving complex business problems with data and transforming analyses into concise insights and recommendations
- A storytelling mindset, including an ability to understand the business context and identify actionable improvement opportunities
- Strong fluency in SQL and experience working with modern database and data warehousing technologies
- Ability to triage and prioritize efficiently across hoc requests and long-term projects, as well as identify and implement tools to effectively communicate and drive alignment around team priorities
- Expertise in crafting A/B tests and multivariate tests and guiding teams to appropriately interpret results and internalize their learnings
- Experience with the OKRs framework
- Ability to distill complex concepts and methodologies, and articulate insights to cross-functional teams and clients with varying levels of knowledge in this space

In the interview process, we’ll look to learn more about your skills, experiences, capabilities, and motivators. Many of our questions will be aimed at understanding how you might operate here at Betterment. Depending on the role, we may ask you to complete a case study exercise or technical assessments, as we want to collect a robust set of data points to better inform our decisions.
On average, it takes us around 3-5 weeks to make a hiring decision, depending on your availability and sense of urgency. As a best practice, we aim to interview at least 2-3 final round candidates before making a hiring decision.
