About the Role

We are seeking a Chief of Staff to partner with the VP of AI Platform and the broader Technology Group leadership team. This is a highly strategic and operational role that sits at the intersection of large-scale infrastructure, data platforms, and the engineering systems that power Nuro’s autonomy and product development.

The AI Platform organization builds and operates the foundation that enables all of Nuro’s engineering. It includes Nuro’s AI data flywheel that empowers the development of our AI system, including data platform, simulation, machine learning infrastructure, compute & storage, cloud infra. It also includes onboard system and product engineering. Together, these teams deliver the technical backbone that supports autonomy development today and will form the data and engineering platform that enables Nuro’s future commercial partners.

The Chief of Staff will help the organization operate with focus, clarity, and urgency. You will drive cross-team collaboration, track and resolve long-pole challenges, elevate key issues, and serve as an extension of the VP, ensuring the AI Platform is executing effectively across Nuro’s internal engineering needs and external partnership goals.

This position is designed for a strategic and technically fluent operator who can understand the complexity of a broad engineering organization while bringing structure and momentum to it. The ideal candidate combines an engineering mindset with strong business and product acumen, thrives in ambiguous environments, and can translate complex goals into clear, actionable plans. A background in consulting, engineering, or large-scale technical program management is especially valuable.

About the Work

Organizational Operations and Execution

  • Partner with the VP and Technology Group leadership team to define, operationalize, and continuously improve the organization’s operating system
  • Serve as an extension of the VP, drive execution on critical technical programs by identifying long-pole dependencies, unblocking progress, and tracking key milestones across data, infrastructure, and software systems
  • Facilitate collaboration between AI Platform, Autonomy, and Hardware teams to ensure alignment and integration across all technical layers of Nuro’s stack
  • Manage leadership meetings, quarterly reviews, and cross-functional communications to maintain clarity, momentum, and accountability
  • Anticipate risks and proactively drive solutions across engineering and partner interfaces

Strategic and Business Alignment

  • Serve as a thought partner to the VP on organization structure, strategic priorities, and resource allocation
  • Help define and track critical milestones that tie AI Platform deliverables directly to company-level objectives and commercialization timelines
  • Drive alignment between Nuro’s technical roadmap and business strategy, ensuring the AI Platform’s architecture and tools accelerate autonomy development and customer success
  • Act as a connective layer between deeply technical teams and cross-functional stakeholders, translating complex engineering work into business impact and commercial readiness

Program and Partner Management

  • Work with TPMs and functional leads to maintain clear visibility into critical-path deliverables and readiness checkpoints across infrastructure, data systems, and ML development
  • Coordinate with commercial and partner teams to ensure AI Platform capabilities are well-positioned to support external use cases and integrations
  • Translate technical updates into executive-ready insights and communications for senior leadership and Board audiences

People and Culture

  • Partner with the People and Recruiting teams to support headcount planning, talent reviews, and engagement initiatives
  • Help foster a culture of operational rigor, accountability, and cross-functional collaboration
  • Encourage alignment, clarity, and consistency across geographically distributed teams

About You

You are a deeply motivated, intellectually curious, and technically fluent leader who thrives at the intersection of strategy and engineering. You bring a strong foundation in rigorous technical or analytical training, coupled with the drive to operate in fast-moving, complex environments. You understand the tech stack at its core and use that understanding to guide strategic, high-impact decisions.

You have:

  • 7+ years of experience in engineering operations, consulting, product or program management, or technical leadership roles within large-scale software, AI, or infrastructure systems
  • Proven technical depth, with the ability to engage meaningfully in discussions across software engineering areas. 
  • Evidence of excellence, a track record of high performance and tangible impact in your current or previous roles, whether through technical achievement, organizational leadership, or strategic execution.
  • Exceptional analytical judgment, capable of navigating ambiguity, identifying first-principles solutions, and driving clarity in complex decision spaces
  • A rigorous, problem-solving mindset, honed through disciplined thinking and years of technical or operational experience
  • Strong communication and influence skills, enabling you to translate between engineering and business contexts and align diverse teams around shared outcomes
  • Intrinsic motivation and a bias for action, you take ownership, anticipate challenges, and elevate the bar for operational excellence

Bonus Points 

  • Background in engineering, computer science, or another technically rigorous discipline
  • Experience in AI, autonomy, robotics, or large-scale software systems
  • Consulting or strategic operations experience, combining business strategy with technical problem-solving
  • Experience supporting senior technical or executive leaders in high-growth, technically complex organizations

At Nuro, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package. For this position, the reasonably expected base pay range is between $160,000 and $240,000 for the level at which this job has been scoped. Your base pay will depend on several factors, including your experience, qualifications, education, location, and skills. In the event that you are considered for a different level, a higher or lower pay range would apply. This position is also eligible for an annual performance bonus, equity, and a competitive benefits package.
