Discord

Associate Product Counsel, Consumer Revenue

at Discord

San Francisco Bay Area

Discord is used by over 200 million people every month for many different reasons, but there’s one thing that nearly everyone does on our platform: play video games. Over 90% of our users play games, spending a combined 1.5 billion hours playing thousands of unique titles on Discord each month. Discord plays a uniquely important role in the future of gaming. We are focused on making it easier and more fun for people to talk and hang out before, during, and after playing games.

Discord's Legal team is looking for an Associate Product Counsel to join its Product Legal team to provide dedicated support for our Consumer Revenue products. Discord's Product Legal team partners directly with Product, Engineering, Data Science, and cross-functional teams to provide legal guidance and strategy that helps Discord launch new products and grow our user base. We help teams navigate complex legal landscapes while achieving their product goals by seeing around corners to identify risks and opportunities before they become roadblocks.

As Associate Product Counsel, Consumer Revenue, you'll be a key member of our Product Legal team, partnering directly with our Consumer Revenue teams to grow products like Nitro, Shop, Server Boosting, and other premium features. You'll advise on a range of topics including subscription models, virtual goods, and consumer protection in digital economies. Reporting to our Lead Counsel, Product & Payments, you'll join a small but growing team where your work will directly shape how Discord builds and scales premium products that serve millions of users worldwide.

What you'll be doing

  • Serve as a key legal advisor to our Consumer Revenue product teams, providing strategic counsel on digital goods, subscriptions and membership programs, and assistance with virtual currency, marketplace, and other features throughout the product development lifecycle
  • Advise on consumer protection compliance for Discord's revenue products across multiple jurisdictions, including laws governing digital goods sales, subscription practices, and online marketplaces
  • Partner cross-functionally with Product, Engineering, Marketing, Policy, and Regulatory Compliance teams to translate complex legal requirements into practical, scalable solutions that enable product innovation
  • Develop playbooks, templates, training materials, and scalable legal processes that help product teams move quickly while maintaining compliance
  • Monitor emerging legal and regulatory developments in digital commerce, marketplaces, and gaming economies, proactively advising on their impact to Discord's products
  • Collaborate with colleagues across the Legal team—including Privacy, Commercial and Marketing, Litigation & Regulatory, and Intellectual Property—to ensure comprehensive guidance on complex product initiatives

What you should have

  • J.D. from an accredited law school
  • Admission to the California Bar or eligible to register as in-house counsel with the California Bar
  • 4+ years of legal experience, ideally combining law firm and in-house experience at a consumer-facing technology company
  • Demonstrated experience counseling product teams on consumer protection laws, privacy, digital commerce, and/or online platforms—particularly around subscriptions, virtual goods, or online marketplaces
  • Strong business judgment and the ability to provide practical, creative legal advice that balances risk management with business objectives
  • Proven ability to build trusted relationships with cross-functional partners and communicate complex legal concepts clearly to non-legal audiences
  • Self-starter mentality with excellent project management skills and comfort operating in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment

Bonus points

  • Experience with gaming platforms, social platforms, UGC platforms, or digital marketplaces
  • Knowledge of international consumer protection frameworks (EU, UK, APAC)
  • Exposure to platform liability, intellectual property issues, or child safety regulations
  • Experience developing legal operations infrastructure (templates, playbooks, training programs)
